Running a Program by Clicking on an Icon on the Desktop

Howdy Y’all,

Gramps here. I’ve been working on writing a couple of little programs to make life a bit easier as I work around my Linux Mint LMDE box, and I was getting a bit tired of typing in a big long command to run my program every time I made a change. It seemed to me that there ought to be a way to just click on a desktop icon to make it go…just like the real programs you “install” on your box.

Keeping The LMDE Box Up-To-Date

Howdy Y’all,

Gramps here. Ever since I installed LMDE on the main notebook, I’ve been worrying about how to keep LMDE up to the minute in terms of new stuff from the Debian Testing repository. I know it’s got to be done or else I’ll get too far behind, but the little fella was running so well I was afraid to break it.

LibreOffice Spell Checker

Howdy Y’all,

Gramps here. I was writing up a little project the other day and I showed it to Mrs Gramps to see what she thought. Lo and behold, she found a couple of spelling mistakes. They were real stinkers too!

Make a Program Run Every Time You Start Your Box

Howdy Y’all,

Gramps here. Over the last few days I’be been converting my main box from Ubuntu 10.04, which I liked just fine, to Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), which I’m gonna like some day. But that’s a story for another day. Today’s story is about something else…getting something to happen every time you start your box up.

Howdy Y’all!

Well, this here’s Gramps, and I’m talkin’ from the garage where all my boxes live. They live there ’cause most of ’em are not allowed inside by Grams. Seems they make too much noise and don’t look pretty enough to match the rest of the place.

I like it fine out here anyway, and I hope you’ll join me every now ‘n then to chat about keepin’ things runnin’ smooth and fast. I got a bunch of Linux boxes of various kilt ‘n kin, so we’ll have lots to talk about. Leave me a word or two in the comments if there’s something special you’d like to hear about.

So, ’til next time, keep them brain cells movin’ and see if you can’t learn somethin’ new every day!
